A tsunami in 2004 destroyed many coastal towns and fishing vessels, and it has taken years to slowly rebuild. I photographed a group of fishermen and their families on assignment for World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU), a microfinance organization that was helping to provide affordable loans and sustainable financial services to these fishing communities through local branches of the Sri Lanka Women's Co-op. <img The logo highlights Gdansk as a global gathering hub, and pays graphic homage to its role as the birthplace of the Polish Solidarity movement, and to Poland's central role in the global credit union movement. Because Gdansk is not a well-known city to many North Americans (who comprise many of the event's prospective attendees), we chose to focus on the name of the unfamiliar and difficult-to-pronounce city and play it up in a fun and whimsical way. The conference slogan, "Let's Gdansk!," made its way onto advertisements, e-cards, marketing mailers, and even a video dance competition leading up to the event. On the island of Lingira, a small community a few miles from the port city of Jinja, the difficulties of poverty and access to education are further amplified by isolation from the mainland.
